Betrayal of purpose

The fifth line of Gate 28 introduces a fundamental tension between commitment and self-protection. Where Great Excess ordinarily concerns itself with managing extremes and excess capacity, the fifth line operates from deep suspicion of others' intentions. This line assumes it is constantly being watched and expected to deliver, which creates a protective withdrawal, a closing off even as engagement is demanded.
