Colour sits directly beneath the line of a gate, and Variable reads it four times over, once for each arrow. The number stays fixed; what it names changes with the position. Colour 1 in the Design Sun is the Determination of Appetite, a body that digests best when it eats from a real hunger signal rather than from the clock. Colour 1 in the Design Nodes is the Environment of Caves.

Provenance: researched and cross-checked 22 August 2026 against Jovian Archive and humdes.com Sources: https://jovianarchive.com/pages/the-basics-of-substructure-in-human-design; https://jovianarchive.com/blogs/deeper-mechanics-system-theory/an-introduction-to-hexagram-line-substructure-color; https://www.gethumandesign.com/docs/variable/motivation/; https://www.gethumandesign.com/docs/variable/perspective/; https://www.thedesignofyou.com/blog/environments-and-human-design Noted at time of writing: Which of consecutive and alternating Appetite belongs to the left arrow is reported inconsistently across sources, so the entry names the pair without assigning direction. Transference pairing (Fear with Need) is corroborated by two independent sources but not found stated on Jovian Archive's public pages. Not yet reviewed by a certified practitioner.
