          Zygmunt Janiszewski's Biography

          Polish mathematician, organizer of science, one of the leading representatives of the Warsaw school of mathematics. He studied in Zurich, Göttingen and Paris. Doctoral thesis Sur les continus irréductibles entre deux points , the promoter was Henri Lebesgue, defended in 1911. The examination committee consisted of mathematicians such as Henri Poincaré and Maurice Fréchet. In 1913 he published a fundamental work On cutting the plane by continua (O cutting the plane by continua) concerning topology of the plane. It is one of the creators of the Warsaw school topology.
          He was the founder of the journal “Fundamenta Mathematicae” devoted exclusively to theory, topology and the theory of functions of a real variable. The magazine has played a large role in the development of Polish mathematics and the world, being a platform for international cooperation of mathematicians. Janiszewski name was called one of the prizes Polish Mathematical Society.
          He died on 3 January 1920 at the age of 31 in the Spanish flu.
