          Wolfgang Spann's Biography

          German forensic pathologist.
          Spann was appointed chair of forensic medicine in Freiburg (1966) and in Munich (1969), in each case serving as head of the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Medicine. From 1967 to 1968, Spann was Dean of Freiburg Medical School, and from 1971 until his retirement in 1989 he was Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Munich.
          He was involved in determining the causes of death of Stepan Bandera, Ingrid Schubert, Marianne Strauss, Franz Josef Strauss, Karl Heinz Beckurts and Vera Brühne. He also conducted a postmortem on Rudolf Hess.
          Spann was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross 1st class of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Bavarian Constitution Silver Medal. He was an honorary Doctor of Medical Faculties of the Universities of Freiburg and Istanbul.
          He died on January 11, 2013.
