          Willis Lamb's Biography

          American scientist who shared the Nobel Prize for physics on 2 November 1955 with Dr. Polykarp Kusch (born 26 January 1911, Blankenburg, Germany) for work in precision atomic measurements and discoveries regarding the hyper-fine structure of the hydrogen spectrum.
          Lamb earned his Ph.D. in physics in 1938 and taught on the faculty of Columbia 1938-1952. He was made a full professor in 1948. From 1951-1956, he taught at Stanford, moving to Oxford 1956-1962. When he returned to the U.S. in 1962, he taught at Yale until 1974 when he became professor of physics and optical sciences at the University of Arizona.
          On 5 June 1939, Lamb married his first wife, Ursula Schaefer, a German student, who became a distinguished historian of Latin America. After her death in 1996 he married physicist Bruria Kaufman in 1996, whom he later divorced. In 2008 he married Elsie Wattson.
          Lamb died in Tucson, Arizona on 15 May 2008 at the age of 94 due to complications of a gallstone disorder.
