          William McHardy's Biography

          Scottish educator and professor.
          He graduated from the University of Aberdeen, MA 1932, BD 1935 and was awarded an honorary DD in 1958. After further study in Edinburgh and Oxford, he was appointed Samuel Davidson Professor of Old Testament Studies at the University of London, 1948 – 1960, and Regius Professor of Hebrew at Christ Church, Oxford, 1960 – 1978. He was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1990.
          He contracted polio in infancy which left him permanently disabled, but his family believed strongly in education, and by winning scholarships he supported his own way through four separate degrees at three universities.
          He married, in 1941, Vera Kemp, she died in 1984. They had a daughter. He died on April 9, 2000 at age 88.
