William Henry Harrison's Biography
American politician, the 9th U.S. President with the shortest term ever served, 32 days.
As a youth he had been apprenticed to a surgeon and later, as the first governor of Indiana, he introduced smallpox inoculation and forbade the sale of liquor to the Indians. He seemed to have been always subject to digestive upsets.
Harrison married Anna Symmes on 25 November 1795; they had six sons and four daughters. His wife never entered the White House with him as she was an invalid by then, though she outlived him by more than 20 years.
Inauguration day, 4 March 1841, dawned very cold but the new president disdained to wear hat, coat or gloves as he addressed the crowd for fully 100 minutes. He caught a cold and in weakened condition was obliged to interview the inevitable crowd of well-wishers and office-seekers. He also insisted on taking his usual walks despite inclement weather. After dinner on March 27, Harrison sent for a doctor who diagnosed bilious pleurisy complicated by liver congestion. The poor man was cupped, blistered, bled and dosed by more purgatives and other remedies of the time than even a well man could stand, and he died on 4 April 1841, Washington, DC.
