          William Falconer's Biography

          Scottish writer of naval poetry and “The Universal Marine Dictionary.” Falconer went to sea as a boy, surviving a shipwreck of the Britannia off the coast of Greece in 1750. He wrote a long poem, “The Shipwreck” 1762, that was widely praised, along with his other noted work, the “Universal Marine Dictionary,” 1769. Falconer drowned in 1769 when the Aurora was lost off the coast of Mozambique.
          Falconer was born on the same day as George Washington.
