          Willem Hussem's Biography

          Dutch painter, sculptor and poet.
          From 1918 to 1936 he lived in Paris, where he met, among others, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso.
          In 1936 he settled permanently in The Hague. After World War II, he followed abstract art movements including Fugare, Liga Nieuw Beelden and Verve. His work is considered part of the art movement known as the New Hague School (Dutch: Nieuwe Haagse School).
          During the 1960s he published several volumes of poetry, of which the best known is “Voor twee scharren blauwbekken” (1966).
          In 1967 he began sculpting in metal.
          He died in The Hague on 21 July 1974.
