          Wilhelm Mardus's Biography

          German politician, a member of the SPD (Social Democratic Party) who briefly served as mayor of the Berlin district of Friedrichshain from January to 25 October 1947.
          Wilhelm Mardus, the son of a roofer, began his career as a blacksmith before serving in the First World War as a musketeer. After the compulsory unification of the SPD and KPD into the SED in East Germany in 1946, Mardus continued to work in the surviving SPD local associations.
          Wilhelm Mardus married the saleswoman Emma Hanke on 27 October 1917 in Berlin. A son was born in 1919, and he emigrated with his family to Canada in 1956.
          Wilhelm Mardus died on 4 November 1960 in Berlin, aged 67.
