          Wilhelm Furtwängler's Biography

German musician and noted conductor. He directed orchestras in a number of European cities between 1911 and 1922, then became the permanent conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Leipzig Orchestra. One of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, he was perhaps naive to believe that art transcended politics. Furtwangler stayed in his beloved Germany through WW II and despite his challenge of political authority in dangerous ways, he was considered guilty by association with the Third Reich. In truth, he used his money and sociopolitical powers to save the lives of many German Jews. He died of bronchial pneumonia on 30 November 1954 in Ebersteinburg, Germany.
