          Wilhelm Emil Fein's Biography

          German electrical engineer, industrialist and inventor who designed the first portable (hand-held) electric drill in 1895. (The first electric drill, a stationary device used in mining, was invented by Scottish-born Arthur James Arnot in Australia in 1889).
          He co-founded the company C. & E. Fein in Karlsruhe with his brother Carl in 1867, which they moved to Stuttgart in 1870.
          In 1879 Fein received a patent for a phone with a horseshoe magnet and in 1885 another for a military phone – this was the first portable phone in the world. In 1888 he published his book Electrical Appliances, Machines and Devices.
          In 1891 Wilhelm Emil Fein received the Württemberg State Medal for Art and Science. He died in Stuttgart on 6 October 1898 at age 56.
