          Werner Hueck's Biography

German pathologist who conducted basic research on iron metabolism, pigments and cholesterol metabolism. His pigment analyses are regarded as the basis of modern histochemistry, and his cholesterol research has provided essential insight into the pathology of arteriosclerosis. Hueck gained international reputation through his work on the mesenchyme (eg normal and pathological histology of the spleen) and granulomatous growth of tumours (eg basaliomas). Degenerative and rheumatic mesenchymal changes in old age were a further research focus. His pathological-morphological concept is summarised in the textbook Morphological Pathology. In contrast to the analytical classical pathology of Rudolf Virchow, Hueck represented an “idealized” pathological concept, oriented to the morphological conceptions of Goethe, which should nevertheless be in harmony with the demands of clinics and practices.
He died on 1 July 1962 in Munich, aged 80.
