Wanna Marchi's Biography
Italian entrepreneur, millionaire and highly successful creator of a line of cosmetics which were publicized through a huge TV ad campaign. She was very popular in the 1980s and ’90s, so much so that she was nicknamed the “queen of teleshopping.” In June 1986, a fire in her firm caused damage of one million lira. She was later condemned several times for serious illegal acts connected to her business.
In 1990 Wanna Marchi was arrested and then sentenced to 1 year and 11 months in prison for complicity in fraudulent bankruptcy for the bankruptcy of the company “Wanna Marchi” in her name, through which she sold cosmetic products. She returned to selling on television with her daughter Stefania, on various local private broadcasters.
On 27 November 2001, the Striscia la Notizie TV show revealed a scoop about a series of scams that involved her, along with her daughter and the self-styled magician Mario do Nascimento.
On 24 January 2002, Wanna Marchi and her daughter Stefania Nobile were arrested with five other people linked in various ways to the scamming company, which managed teleshopping. A total of 132 people filed a formal complaint against the company and 62 were part of a civil party in the trial. The Guardia di Finanza estimated that the sum earned by the scammers would amount to 63 billion lire. Wanna Marchi and Stefania Nobile chose to go to trial, and the Marchi-Nobile trial began on 2 July 2003.
On 3 April 2006, Marchi and Nobile were sentenced to two years and six months of imprisonment for aggravated fraud before the first criminal section of the Court of Milan: the two women and the other defendants were also sentenced to compensate some of the victims of scams for an amount of almost 40,000 euros. On 10 May 2006, Marchi, Francesco Campana and their daughter were sentenced in the first instance by the Court of Milan for criminal association aimed at aggravated fraud, with sentences of 10, 4 and 10 years respectively, and compensation for the victims (over 2 million euros), largely made possible by the seizure of various real estate properties in the name of Stefania Nobile. Wanna Marchi was found to have no property in her name.
Since April 2006, Wanna Marchi and Stefania Nobile have been under house arrest where they broadcast a videoblog entitled The Whole Truth.
On 4 March 2009, the Court of Cassation definitively confirmed the reduced sentences of 9 years and 6 months of imprisonment for Wanna Marchi, 9 years and 4 months for her daughter Stefania Nobile and 3 years for Francesco Campana. Marchi and her daughter were convicted, in April 2010, also of fraudulent bankruptcy for the bankruptcy of the Ascié company.
On 8 October 2011, Wanna Marchi was granted semi-release to work in the bar and restaurant La Malmaison Café, owned by Davide Lacerenza, her daughter’s boyfriend. On 30 October 2012 it was announced that Marchi would be able to benefit from a temporary suspension of the sentence to take care of her daughter who would undergo hip surgery, it being understood that the end of sentence for Marchi itself remained set for September 2015.
Mother and daughter have since returned to making television appearances.
