          Walter Mund's Biography

          Belgian biochemist, a specialist in radiochemistry, who developed a device in 1924 to enrich Katanga’s radium, making the city of Leuven an important centre of radium research. Mund also became a pioneer in medical applications of radioactivity, including the development of a device for producing radioactive water used in thermal spas for thermal purposes. He had also developed a device to extract and purge radon.
          In 1923 he married Ludmila Dontchila, a Moravian student at the Leuven Agricultural University, and they had four children. On 15 August 1956, he was found dead by his wife at the foot of the stairs in their home. He was 64.
