          Walter Borchard's Biography

German architect of the classical modern style, who turned to an unpretentious, simple and objective style of architecture early in his career. Typical of many of his residential buildings are glazed loggias with filigree rungs.
Borchard initially designed residential complexes and residential buildings for building cooperatives in Berlin. By 1933, nearly twenty of his residential complexes had been completed. Some of them are listed buildings, including the Zeppelinhäuser in the Kissingen district on the Prenzlauer Promenade in Berlin-Pankow and a facility on the Puderstraße in Berlin-Plänterwald.
The Zeppelinhäuser caused a stir with its spectacular roof-shell construction. The roofs are made of four-centimetre-thick cylindrical shells, which were built according to the Zeiss Dywidag method. Borchard used this novel method for the first time in the rooftops of a residential complex.
He died on 1 October 1948 in Berlin, aged 60.
He is the subject of the biography, Walter Bochard – Architekt des DeutschlandRadio-Funkhauses by Adolf Stock (DeutschlandRadio, 2004).
