W.P.C. Zeeman's Biography
Dutch ophthalmologist.
Zeeman studied medicine, became a physician (1904) and dissertated with distinction February 7, 1905 at Amsterdam with the thesis “Over het verband tusschen de refractie en het brekende stelsel van het oog” under professor Th. Place.
Between July 26, 1916 and July 8, 1943 and between May 7, 1945 and September 15, 1947 he was professor in ophthalmology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). His oration held on October 9, 1916 was titled “Gemeenschap en oogheelkunde” (Community and ophthalmology).
On 26 June 1942 he was arrested by the occupying Germans on political grounds. He lost his position. After the war, on May 7, 1945 he was restored in function. Colleagues later called him “the conscience of the Dutch ophthalmologists”.
Zeeman deceased June 15, 1960 at Amsterdam after a long illness (age 80).
Personal
Zeeman married 11 October 1906 at Amsterdam Carolina Hendrika Pouw (29 March 1885, Amsterdam – 19 Jan 1980, Amsterdam). They got two children: Maria Catharina Wilhelmina Elisabeth (Mies) Zeeman (1908-1943) and Wim (Jim) Zeeman (1919-2011).
