American fiction writer, poet and autobiographer who was also a school teacher by profession. Her three memoirs include With a Southern Accent (1948), about her youth in Gastonburg; A Place of Springs (1979) about the Great Depression and civil rights era; and Grass Widow: Making My Way in Depression Alabama (published posthumously, 2004) about her life as a single mother in the 1930s Deep South. She also wrote short stories for a number of periodicals including the Georgia Review and the Saturday Evening Post. She died on 16 May 1998 at age 96.
