Vespasian's Biography
Roman emperor who reigned from AD 69 to 79. Founder of the first Flavian dynasty. Participation in the conquest of britain (43 AD), Proconsul of Africa, Commander-in-Chief in the first Jewish-Roman War. Provided for veterans’ pensions, army reform, strict fiscal policy, among other tings. Builder of the Temple of Jupiter and the Colosseum.
His wife, Flavia Domitilla, was the former mistress of the knight Statilius Capella. With her he had three children: Titus and Domitian, who became his successors, and Domitilla who died before Vespasian began his reign. Flavia Domitilla also died before he began his reign.
After Domitilla’s early death, Vespasian lived with Antonia Caenis, a freed woman of the emperor’s mother Antonia. Due to the difference in status, he chose the form of concubinage for this union, which was recognized in Roman law as a second form of monogamous heterosexual relationship alongside marriage. When Vespasian became emperor, she appeared in public as his wife. She is described by Cassius Dio as faithful and with an extremely good memory; moreover, she was wealthy and enterprising, for example, she supported the emperor in the sale of civil rights. Caenis died in the early 70s.
Vespasian died on 23 June 79 at age 69.
