          Uri Zvi Greenberg's Biography

An acclaimed Israeli poet and journalist who wrote in Yiddish and Hebrew.
His strident, Expressionist verse exhorts the Jewish people to redeem their historical destiny; he warned of the impending Holocaust in such poems as “In malkhus fun tselem” (1922; “In the Kingdom of the Cross”). An adherent of the right-wing Revisionist Zionist Party, Greenberg used his poetry to espouse a religious mystical view of Zionism and to further Revisionism’s extreme nationalism.
Considered a foremost Hebrew poet of his generation, Greenberg was at odds with the main intellectual and political thrust in Hebrew literature and Israeli politics because of his political and social views. He served one term in the Knesset (parliament) as a member of the Herut Party (1949–51).
In 1947, 1954 and 1977, Greenberg was awarded the Bialik Prize for literature.
In 1957, Greenberg was awarded the Israel Prize for his contribution to literature.
          He died 8 May 1981.
