          Trini Lopez's Biography

          American musician and actor, a guitarist and popular singer of the ’60s, whose hits included a version of “If I Had a Hammer”, which earned him a Golden Disc, and “Lemon Tree”. His LP Trini Lopez at PJ’s went gold in 1965 and led to successful European tours. Lopez acted in the movie The Dirty Dozen in 1966.
          He taught himself to play and dropped out of high school to tour the Southwest with his own combo, giving dynamic performances of Mexican and American folk songs along with current top-40 hits. His peak year was 1963 with a recording contract that led to many hit singles. He designed two guitars for the Gibson Guitar Corporation, which are now collectors’ items.
          Lopez remained a lifelong bachelor and had no children. His nephew, Trini Martinez, was the drummer for the Dallas indie rock band Bedhead. Trini Lopez died on 11 August 2020, at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California. He was 83, and suffered from complications of COVID-19.
