Tor Erling Staff's Biography
Norwegian jurist, attorney, Supreme Court lawyer, and noted debater of social affairs who was considered one of the country’s premier defence attorneys and was particularly known for taking controversial cases.
Staff often took on the role of opponent of what was deemed politically correct. This led to him being criticised for his outspokenness regarding divisive and contentious issues.
Staff was in 1956 chairman of the Norwegian Students’ Society and was editor of the anniversary book that was published in connection with the Students’ Society’s 150th anniversary in 1963. He became a Supreme Court lawyer in 1967 and was director of the Norwegian Publishers’ Association 1966-1970.
In 1994 he co-hosted the TV debate program “Lønning og Staff” with Per Ståle Lønning.
Staff died of complications from Parkinson’s on 22 July 2018 in Oslo aged 85.
