Tom (1931a) Wilson's Human Design Chart
1/3 Splenic Projector**Tom Wilson (March 25, 1931 – September 6, 1978)** was an influential American record producer, renowned for his groundbreaking work in the 1960s with iconic artists such as Bob Dylan, the Mothers of Invention, Simon & Garfunkel, and the Velvet Underground. Born in Waco, Texas, Wilson exhibited the characteristics of a Projector in Human Design, which shaped his approach to collaboration and creativity in the music industry.
Graduating from Harvard, Wilson borrowed $500 (equivalent to approximately $4,830 in 2020) to establish Transition Records, driven by a vision to record the most advanced jazz musicians of his time. This venture aligned with his Splenic Inner Authority, guiding him to make instinctual decisions that would influence the trajectory of modern music. Transition Records released several notable albums, including Sun Ra’s *Jazz By Sun Ra* and Cecil Taylor’s debut *Jazz Advance*. Despite the label’s bankruptcy in 1957, Wilson’s innovative spirit and ability to attract talent led him to a position at United Artists Records.
As a Projector, Wilson thrived on invitations to share his unique insights and talents. His work as a staff producer at Columbia Records positioned him as a key figure in the folk-rock movement, where he produced three of Bob Dylan’s seminal albums: *The Times They Are a-Changin’*, *Another Side of Bob Dylan*, and *Bringing It All Back Home*. His strategic approach to production was evident when he transformed Simon & Garfunkel’s original acoustic track of “The Sound of Silence” into a #1 pop hit by overdubbing electric instruments, a decision that significantly impacted the duo’s career and the genre itself.
In 1966, Wilson signed the Mothers of Invention to Verve Records and produced their debut album *Freak Out!*. He also took the helm as producer for the Velvet Underground, further showcasing his ability to recognize and cultivate groundbreaking talent. His 1/3 Profile in Human Design reflects his experimental nature, as he navigated the complexities of the music industry while learning from both successes and setbacks.
Tragically, Tom Wilson passed away from a heart attack in Los Angeles on September 6, 1978, at the age of 47. His legacy as a visionary producer continues to resonate, highlighting the profound impact of his Projector energy and his dedication to serving the music community through his innovative contributions.
