Thomas Starzl's Biography
American physician, researcher, and expert on organ transplants who performed the first human liver transplants, in the 1960s. He also performed the first simultaneous heart and liver transplant (on six-year-old Stormie Jones) at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1984. He has often been referred to as “the father of modern transplantation.”
His autobiographical memoir, The Puzzle People, was named by The Wall Street Journal as the third best book on doctors’ lives.
He died on 4 March 2017 at age 90 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A documentary, Burden of Genius, covering the medical and scientific advances spearheaded by Starzl himself, was released to the public in 2017 in a series of screenings.
