          Thomas Shanks's Biography

          American computer programmer, the research director of ACS and winner of the 1976 Cambridge Circle prize for the most original work in the field of harmonics.
          He married on 12 July 1970; three daughters in 1971, 1973 and 1979. Six years later, on 1 September 1976, he moved to New York to work with Neil Michelsen. When Michelsen established Astro-Computing Service in San Diego, Shanks joined him, moving to San Diego on 4 July 1978.
          Shanks compiled and programmed the invaluable reference books, “The American Atlas,” 1978, and “The International Atlas,” 1985.
