          Thomas Hobbes's Biography

British philosopher and scholar who loved geometry, Latin and discussion. He stated that man can form no idea of God and was considered a freethinker, an alarming position in that it could be subversive to the state.
Hobbes was a premature birth, the third child in the family. Their father abandoned them. Tall, genial and temperate, Hobbes became a private tutor and companion to his students. He studied and wrote, becoming known in intellectual circles. Perhaps his best known work is “The Leviathan” (1651), in which he defended political absolutism as the price of individual security.
He enjoyed tennis and debate, sometimes losing his temper in the passion of argument. He had an illegitimate daughter.
