          Theodor Rosenhauer's Biography

German landscape, portrait and still life painter who worked in oil and watercolour. He received The National Prize of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) (Nationalpreis der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik) in 1973.
Rosenhauer attended the Dresden School of Applied Arts before studying at the Dresden Art Academy with Ferdinand Dorsch from 1919 to 1924. In 1924 he began to paint as a freelancer, his friends included Karl Kröner and Paul Wilhelm. A study trip to Romania followed in 1925, which influenced his later work.
In 1934, Rosenhauer’s application to the Dresden Art Academy was rejected. He had been unanimously selected for appointment by the Dresden university lecturers, but the Nazi regime did not allow this. In 1938 he undertook another study trip to Italy.
In the Second World War, he did his military service in Kraków from 1940 to 1945. During a bomb attack on the city of Dresden in 1945, his studio in the polytechnic school on Antonsplatz was destroyed and practically his entire previous work was destroyed. Therefore, he later worked temporarily in Radebeul. In 1969 he was appointed a member of the Academy of the Arts of the GDR and in 1987 honorary senator of the art academy in Dresden.
After a stroke in 1992, he lived in a nursing home in Berlin-Wannsee until his death on 14 June 1996 in Berlin at age 95.
