          Susannah York's Biography

          British leading lady of stage and starring in over 60 films, as well as being an author of screen plays and children’s books. Raised in a remote Scottish village, the intriguing blonde, blue-eyed leading lady graduated from London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her best-known roles included that of the controversial nude lesbian in “The Killing of Sister George,” 1968 and she was nominated for an Oscar in “They Shoot Horses Don’t They?,” 1969. She won the Best Actress award at Cannes for “Images” in 1972. In the 70’s, she had success with her first children’s book, “In Search of Unicorns.” In the ’80s she found steady employment with the release of the “Superman” films in which she played the Kryptonian mom. She has co-written a screenplay.
          York was married to actor-writer Michael Wells. The couple had two children and lived on a Sussex farm but their marriage ended in divorce..
          She died of cancer in London on January 16, 2011.
