          Stefaan Maene's Biography

Belgian backstroke and medley swimmer who competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
He was selected to compete in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and had to forfeit at the last minute due to an injury of his right shoulder. Before his forfeiture, Maene was selected to compete in the 100m back stroke and the 4x100m individual medley. On 16 July 1996, the Olympic Selection committee had to decide whether Hans Bijlemans or Bart Reymen were to compete in the individual races instead of training only for the relays. The decision was negative for Maene.
He won his first international medal at the inaugural 1993 FINA Short Course World Championships in Palma de Mallorca: bronze in the 200m backstroke. Two years later, at the 1995 European Aquatics Championships in Vienna, Austria, Maene gained bronze in the 100m backstroke.
