          Selma Lagerlöf's Biography

          Swedish writer, a storyteller of legends of her native Sweden and the Nobel Prize winner for literature, the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, 1909. Her most noted works are “Gosta Berling,” 1891 and “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils” 1907.
          Lagerlof had polio as a child. Her father was forced to work as a school teacher after a long illness that caused them to loose their family estate. Upon winning her Nobel Prize award, she used the money to purchase their family estates and remained there until her death on 16 March 1940.
