American entrepreneur, the founder of Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club and personification of the American Dream of self-made success. A scrappy, bantam-rooster of a boy, he grew up in the poverty of the dusk-bowl. A high-school quarterback, he earned money from delivering papers and selling milk from the family cow and served in the army during WWII. With foresight and vision, he opened his first store in 1945 and parlayed his skill into becoming America’s wealthiest man in 40 years.
Sam Walton died from multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in Little Rock, Arkansas on 5 April 1992 at age 74.
His second son and heir to the fortune, John Walton, died in a fatal plane crash on 27 June 2005. The tiny plane was home-built and crashed just after take-off from Jackson Hole, Wyoming airport at about 12:15 PM. The decorated Vietnam veteran, an entrepreneur in his own right, was 58 at the time of his death.
