          Ron Dellums's Biography

          American politician, a U.S. Congressman and perhaps the most powerful black political operative in the early ’70s. He began his career as a social worker and community organizer in 1962 and was elected to the Senate on 3 November 1970. Though he ran as a Democrat, and caucused as a Democrat in Congress, Dellums described himself as a Socialist.
          Dellums was married three times; eight children and stepchildren. In 1977 one of his sons was jailed for assault and convicted of 2nd degree murder on 13 November 1979.
          In 2000, Dellums published an autobiography, cowritten with H. Lee Halterman, entitled Lying Down with the Lions: A Public Life from the Streets of Oakland to the Halls of Power.
          Dellums died on 30 July 2018, aged 82, after a period of illness.
