          Robert Taylor's Biography

American actor, a handsome and popular leading man who made over 70 films in 35 years. Robert Taylor received the 1953 “World Film Favorite – Male” award at the Golden Globes (tied with Alan Ladd).
The son of a country doctor, he majored in music in college. He followed his music professor out to Pomona, California and a performance in a college production led to a screen test and his career as an actor. He signed a long-term contract with MGM where he reigned as one of Hollywood’s principal actors. He played with such great co-stars as Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as Greta Garbo and Jean Harlow. He starred in the TV series “The Detectives” from 1959-1961.
During World War II he served as a flight instructor with the Navy’s Air Transport and also directed Navy training films and narrated a full-length documentary “The Fighting Lady.” Shunning his glamour- boy image, he acquired a reputation among directors as a no-nonsense professional.
In his personal life, he was married twice, first to Barbara Stanwyk from 1939 to 1951 and later to Ursula Thiess from 1954 until his death of lung cancer on 8 June 1969 in Santa Monica, California.
