          Robbie Coltrane's Biography

Scottish actor and comedian who starred as criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie “Fitz” Fitzgerald in the much acclaimed British TV mystery-drama series Cracker (1993-2006). He later gained worldwide recognition as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond films GoldenEye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999), and as the gentle giant Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series (2001–2011). He was appointed an OBE in the 2006 New Year Honours by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to drama.
During the 1970s, Coltrane rose to prominence as an improvisational nightclub comedian, usually working in ensemble. In films since 1979, Coltrane gained an American following with his antic performances in Nuns on the Run in 1990 and The Pope Must Die in 1991. In 1993, Coltrane launched the British TV detective series Cracker in which he essayed the dramatic role of a volcanic, neurosis-ridden detective. The American A&E cable service broadcast of Cracker earned Coltrane a “Cable Ace Award” in 1994. He also won a Best Actor award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1995 and 1996 for his work on Cracker. However, Coltrane quit the series in 1996, partly so that he would not be typecast and partly because he said he’d “seen other shows which have gone on and on and it didn’t help them.”
A car enthusiast, in 1997 Coltrane hosted the TV series Coltrane’s Planes and Automobiles. He appeared as Tweedle Dum in the February 1999 NBC-TV production of Alice in Wonderland with other big name performers and he starred in the Bond movie The World is Not Enough, released in November 1999.
He was known for his voice performances in the animated films The Tale of Despereaux (2008) and Pixar’s Brave (2012).
Coltrane married Rhona Gemmell on 11 December 1999. The couple had two children, son Spencer (b. 1992), and daughter Alice (b. 1998). Coltrane and Gemmell separated in 2003, and later divorced.
Robbie Coltrane suffered from osteoarthritis in later life. He said he was in “constant pain all day” in 2016, and from 2019 on he employed a wheelchair. He died at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert on 14 October 2022. He was 72, and had been in ill health for two years.
