Richard Sumner Cowan's Biography
American botanist who was the director of the Smithsonian Institution – Natural History Museum. Previously he worked on both sides of the Atlantic: at the New York Botanical Garden and at the Kew Botanical Gardens in England. He also joined expeditions to South America to gather some species in Amapa, Brazil, French Guiana and Venezuela.
After a tragic fall, he died from the effects of brain trauma on 17 November 1997.
