          Richard James Herrin's Biography

American homicide; on 7/07/1977 he killed his college sweetheart, Bonnie Garland, with a hammer, Scarsdale, NY. A poor Mexican-American, he was a junior at Yale when he met the 17-year-old girl on 11/01/1974. They held an instant attraction for each other and fell in love, gradually beginning an affair for their three year romance. Although Herrin had a combined SAT score of 1240 and was his high school’s valedictorian in Los Angeles, he proved a poor student at Yale.
Bonnie made a trip to Europe, where she was seeing other men, and on the day that she returned home, 7/01/1977, she wrote Herrin a farewell letter. He stayed with her overnight for the next several days, trying to persuade her to continue their relationship. On the night of 7/06/1977, after Bonnie went to sleep, Herrin remained awake, thinking of ways to kill her. In the early hours of 7/07/1977 he pounded the head of the sleeping girl with multiple blows from a hammer and killed her. Herrin had always been a “model boy,” and was unable to express anger. Sympathy came from many quarters as he was sincere, disturbed, frightened, lost and remorseful. At his trial, a verdict came in of manslaughter due to temporary insanity.
Willard Gaylin, MD. wrote the biography, “The Killing of Bonnie Garland.”
