          Richard Flatters's Biography

          German portrait and genre painter. Flatters studied from 1837 to 1840 at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Dusseldorf. He then took a job as a genre and portrait painter. In the early 1840s he oversaw the painting of the grand ducal court in Oldenburg. From 1843 to 1848 he was a student in the studio of Paul Delaroche in Paris. From 1845 to 1848 he was active in the Paris Salon, and in the 1850s he again worked as a genre and portrait painter in Oldenburg. He retired from painting in the early 1860s at Brussels, then lived from 1864 in Bremerhaven, where he founded an art school in 1866, and died in 1876.
