Originally a journalist for the CBC’s French-language Radio-Canada, as a war correspondent he accompanied the U.S. troops who liberated the Dachau concentration camp at the end of April 1945. He also covered the Korean war. He began hosting a television program covering political news, “Point de Mire”, on 28 October 1956 at 11:15 p.m., which ran regularly for nearly three years.
He was first elected as a provincial M.P. on 22 June 1960, but after two terms quit the Liberal Party on 14 October 1967 and founded the separatist Parti Québecois exactly a year later. Elected Premier on 15 November 1976, he spearheaded the first (defeated) referendum on Quebec independence on 20 May 1980.
Declared dead forty-five minutes after suffering a heart attack in Montreal at 9:50 p.m. on 1 November 1987.
