          René Daumal's Biography

French writer, His unfinished fantasy; “Mount Analogue” was published with a commentary in France, 1952, and in America in 1960 with notes on what he was trying to say. The strange story described an expedition of queerly assorted individuals trying to climb the highest mountain on earth, a surrealistic fantasy.
Daumal made a meager living by translations. In 1928, with friends, he founded a literary review, “Le Grand Jeu,” devoted to the loftiest ideal of poetry as a quest for the Absolute. A student of Gurdjieff, Daumal’s work attempted to synthesize Central Asian occultism with the sublime vaporings of French symbolism.
          Died 21 May 1944, Paris.
