          Rémy Dumoncel's Biography

French publisher and mayor of the town of Avon in Seine-et-Marne. After studying law in Paris, he married Germaine Tallandier, daughter of the owner of the Tallandier publishing house in Paris, in 1913, with whom he had five children.
In 1940, after Avon was taken by Nazi occupation forces, Rémy Dumoncel joined the Résistance. He gave financial support to writers who could no longer publish works in Nazi-occupied France and also hid Alsatian Jews in the Dordogne department, where he owned a house. In his capacity as mayor, he issued false identity documents to Jews and other refugees, helping them to flee to unoccupied parts of France.
On 4 May 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo at Fontainebleau-Avon railway station and deported to Neuengamme concentration camp.
He died on 15 March 1945 in Hamburg-Neuengamme from exhaustion at age 56.
