British writer, biographer and broadcaster whose books include Charlotte Bronte (1988), The Brontës: Charlotte Brontë and her family (1988), A People’s History Of Britain (2004) and The Mayflower Generation (2017).
She is a former president of the Brontë Society. She is the author of the introductions to the Everyman’s Library editions of Shirley and The Professor.
