Ravi (1920) Shankar's Biography
Indian sitar virtuoso and a composer. He became the world’s best-known exponent of North Indian classical music, in the second half of the 20th century, and influenced many other musicians throughout the world. Shankar was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999.
His three children, Shubhendra Shankar (1942-1992), Norah Jones (born 1979) and Anoushka Shankar (born 1981), were born to different mothers and all became musicians.
On 9 December 2012, Shankar was admitted to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, San Diego, California after complaining of breathing difficulties. He died on 11 December 2012 at around 16:30 PST after undergoing heart valve replacement surgery.
Ravi Shankar received five Grammy awards, including a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards in 2013.
