Purple Schulz's Biography
German pop singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and radio host who achieved great fame in the 1980s and 1990s with songs such as “Sehnsucht”, “Verliebte Jungs” and “Kleine Seen”. The nickname “Purple” came from covering Deep Purple tunes as a 13-year-old.
From the age of eight he received piano lessons and at the age of eleven additional organ lessons. Under the influence of “Uschi Nerke’s Beatclub” and his two older brothers, his musical taste developed. In the 1960s, it was mainly The Who, The Rolling Stones, Small Faces and The Beatles that fascinated him.
He made his stage debut in March 1973 with the band “D’accord”. In 1981, during the New German Wave, singer Wolf Maahn and BAP guitarist Klaus Heuser formed the band Neue Heimat with other musicians. In 1984 Schulz, Hoff and Piek had already renamed themselves “Purple Schulz and the Neue Heimat”. “Sehnsucht” reached number six in Germany and Switzerland and number 20 in Austria in the spring of 1985 and was awarded the Goldene Europa as the most successful German-language single of 1985. It was the band’s breakthrough.
Since the early 1990s, he has lived with his wife in the Glessen district of Bergheim. The couple has three children.
