Princess of Saxe Coburg and Gotha Victoria Melita's Biography
German-British royalty, known to the royal families of Europe as “Ducky”, the daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (later Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha) and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. She had both Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Czar Alexander II for grandparents.
She was coaxed by her grandmother Victoria to marry her homosexual cousin, Ernest Ludwig (known to the royal families as “Ernie”), the future Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, on 19 April 1894 in Coburg, Germany. The couple had one daughter, Eisabeth Marie Alice Viktoria, on 11 March 1895. The couple split in 1901, when a frustrated Ducky, liberated by the death of Queen Victoria, left Ernie for her lover, Grand Duke Kirill of Russia, whom she eventually married on 8 October 1905 in Tegernsee, Germany, after divorcing Ernie.
Little Elisabeth died of typhoid in Skierniewice, Poland on 16 November 1903. Ducky was not there at the time, but was alerted by telegram that her daughter was sick. Unfortunately, she did not make it in time to see her daughter alive again. She and Kirill eventually had two daughters and a son.
She died in Amorbach, Bavaria, Germany on 2 March 1936.
