          Princess of Parma Charlotte's Biography

          Italian nobility, a daughter of Ferdinand, Duke of Parma, and Maria Amalia of Austria. When the French Republic invaded Italy the Duke of Parma and his family fled to Vienna with their nephew the Emperor Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor. A treaty was signed and France annexed the Duchy of Parma. At age 20, Charlotte entered the holy Catholic orders under the name of Sister Giacinta. In 1805, she fled to Rome, taking refuge in a convent under the protection of Pope Pius VII. In 1809, the Pope was forcibly taken to Savona and Fontainebleau in France. For five years she remained a prisoner of state, dying on 15 April 1813.
