          Prince of Hesse Friedrich Wilhelm's Biography

          German prince, as the first-born son of Prince Friedrich Karl of Hesse and Princess Margarete of Prussia. He was a brother-in-law of Prince Philip, the consort of Queen Elizabeth II.
          After military training as a midshipman at the Kriegsschule in Hanover, he served as a lieutenant in the Thuringian Uhlan Regiment No. 6. At the beginning of the First World War, he was deployed with his regiment on the Western Front and was mobilised in France. At Laval, he was badly wounded by a gunshot. The bullet injured one arm and both lungs. After recovering, he was transferred to a divisional staff on the Eastern Front. In 1915 he was wounded there again. Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse died at Cara Omer in Romania on 15 September 1916, aged 22.
