German General of the infantry and Prince of Hesse and by Rhine as a son of Prince Karl of Hessen and by Rhine (1809–1877) and his wife Elisabeth of Prussia (1815–1885), daughter of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia. His older brother was Ludwig IV (Hesse-Darmstadt) (1837–1892) and his younger sister was Anna of Hesse-Darmstadt (1843?1865). His brother Heinrich (1838–1900) was a General of the cavalry.
Wilhelm was interested in art and music and was a friend of composer Richard Wagner’s wife Cosima.
His morganatic marriage on 2 February 1884 with Josephine Bender (11 August 1857 – 24 February 1942) ended his career in the military service. They were the parents of Gottfried von Lichtenberg (b. 19 November 1877 in Darmstadt, Germany; d. 6 September 1914, Esternay, Marne, France), who died in the First World War.
Wilhelm died on 24 May 1900, aged 54, at Rosenhöhe palace.
