          Pierre François Verhulst's Biography

Belgian mathematician and a doctor in number theory from the University of Ghent. Inspired by Thomas Malthus’s An Essay on the Principle of Population (1798), he proposed in 1838 “le modèle de Verhulst” (“Verhulst’s model”) describing the evolution of animal populations through a model that is not exponential. It is in this publication of 1845 that he calls this curve “logistics” without giving the explanation of this term.
He died on 15 February 1849 in Brussels, aged 44.
