          Pierre (1822) Roche's Biography

          French photographer by day and inspector of the moral police by night. He was known as ‘Coutelat du Roché’ and nicknamed ‘René Bérenger le Père-la-Pudeur’ (René Bérenger, the father of modesty).
          He was portrayed in the 1886 oil painting, “Le quadrille de la chaise Louis XIII à l’Elysée Montmartre,” by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The painting depicts him inspecting can-can dancers at a cabaret, watching for any behaviour deemed to cross the limits of decency.
          He died in Paris at 4 a.m. on 22 January 1897.
