          Philippe Comairas's Biography

          French painter, who won the second Prix de Rome in 1833 for his Moïse et le serpent d’airain.
          He was the son of Marie-Victoire Jaquotot (1772-1855), a porcelain painter, and the architect Jean Baptiste André Comairas (1781-1855?), and he studied under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.
          After winning the Prix ??de Rome for painting he was soon commissioned to paint historical portraits for the Museum of the History of France at the Palace of Versailles.
          In 1838, on the recommendation of the architect Achille-Jacques Fédel, he executed some frescoes for the decoration of the Monaco hotel recently acquired by Baron Hope.
          He moved to Fontainebleau, becoming acquainted with the Barbizon school. He befriended Jean-Baptiste Corot, and founded a drawing academy in this city, where he died on 15 February 1875 at age 71.
